What do you know about urban farming techniques?

Let’s dive back into a key topic from the Groof project: Greenhouses!

Urban greenhouses are more than just food production spaces – they’re innovation hubs redefining sustainable agriculture.

But how can we maximize their potential?

Urban greenhouses are transforming cities into sustainable food hubs, but success depends on smart strategies:

 Innovative systems

Rooftop farming often relies on soilless techniques such as hydroponics, aeroponics, or aquaponics. These systems optimize resource use, enabling year-round production in minimal space while reducing environmental impact.

 Smart crop selection

Choosing the right crops is critical and depends on local market demand, consumer preferences, agronomic conditions, growing systems, and technical expertise. Leafy greens, herbs, and small fruits like tomatoes or strawberries thrive in controlled rooftop environments, ensuring high yields.

 Considering the surroundings

If maximizing food production is the goal, technical decisions must align with the surrounding environment. Factors such as shadows from nearby structures, weather patterns, and temperature variations significantly influence greenhouse design, equipment, and plant selection. For rooftop greenhouses, building characteristics like weight-bearing capacity and building integration of the greenhouse are equally crucial.

Poor planning can drastically affect the performance of the greenhouse, so careful analysis is essential!
